This week went pretty well, the theme was animal cruelty. Animal Cruelty is a very popular problem in the Baltimore community. The most popular animal to be abused is the Pitbulls. People become stereotype against pitbulls because they are known to be very mean dogs, but this is not rite. The most common way of animal cruelty is thru dogfighting, and this is not acceptable. One way we learned to keep animals from keepin animals out of shelters is by gettin your dog fixed. When dogs began to have puppies people want to give them away because of the expenses. During my experience at the animal shelter was very touching because i never realized how many animals were being mistreated and were stray.
All dogs can be trained, it just takes patience, dedication, and hardwork. Now to the cats, i am not really a fan of cats but i hate seeing animals in dispair and in cages where they can barely move. Cats are known to be family oriented animals but i do not agree. Ctas are known to scratch and all but you cant be stereotypical and i apologize. Animals are really in despair at that shelter because life there is not as good as life in a home. When i get older i will try to remember to adopt a pet and i hope you will do the same. Animal Cruelty is not right and it needs to stop asap!!!!!!!!!!!!

This week was a fun and crazy week on monday we had prep to get ready to go to the animal shelter we made bags doggie treats and also cat treats.Tuesday we had a vistor from B more dog she brung in a pitbull the pitbull name was ruby.Ruby was well trained she also knew how to do tricks that was showed for us.Ruby s owner did not have to use words all the time she could use her hands and ruby would know when to sit, laydown, and do tricks.I would say this week was the best week because i enjoy looking and playing with animals. THE END
elexus,week5
this week 2 ladies from bmore dogs came to us . they are the people that saves dogs from abusive or mistreating owners. they rescue the dogs from them so that they will not get hurt any more. the brought in a dog name ruby who was abuse and has had many litters before she was rescued. now that she is in good hands, she is doing very well. she can do all these things that a dog is suppose to be taught how to do.her old owners did teach her any thing. she knows what to do when her new owner is not around her all the time. i say she was taught very well by her new owner. i wish bmore dogs the best in helping rescue all the pitbulls in need.

The world without service would be awfully bleek. most of the worlds jobs would be eradicated if no one served. the world withou service would just be lawless and overall every man for themselves and with that thought i can predict mass murder and even genocide. With that there would be no homeless shelters or orphanages thus making the homeless numbers sky rocket. The funny thing about it would be that the words iam using was taught to me by my teachers throughout my life, without them and thier service to me and my peers we wouldn't have any type of education. in conclusion the world would a delapidated mess.
Akil Lewis
The world would definetly be different if people weren`t willing to serve. Service can come from many different ways through the community, spiritual, and many others. All people need service if u know it or not. The people who are willing to serve are far and few between. I am a person that doesn`t mind serving because i am blessed. The less fortunate people need service and i will help because God has provided all I need. People that arent as fortunate as me are excited just to see a smiling face and be encouraged. I have served at Our Daily Bread, The Nursing Name, and The B. Gaddy Center, i really enjoy helpin others because if it was me i would want the same. This is how i feel about service:)!!!

This week was a short week we had a lot of days out monday, tuesday, wednesday.Thrusday was a rough day because the kids was away for a long time so some kids forgot the rules. So we had to keep the kids in order so it wouldn t get bad the kids had to right a paragraph on what would happen if people didn t serve. Most of them wrote pretty good paragraphs and knew how to spell.Thats how my week was
logging off .

if the world didnt serve than everybody in the world would be very selfish. if we were to go to the market to get food , there wouldnt be any meet because the farmers would keep the meet for themselves. helpful people try to make the world a better place.if people didnt serve then the world would be much more horrible than it already . PEOPLE IN THE WORLD NEED TO SERVE!!!!!
Andrea, Week 3
So our AIDS week got cut short, but after just typing up the blogs, I'm glad to see some of the kids really understand that the world would be reckless and sad without people who serve their communities. I think Daziyha said it pretty well when she wrote, "if no one will serve no one will live because people have to help eachother". I also have to add I edited that for spelling and grammar and I do adore her phonetic solutions to spelling words but the quote is fantastic, because it sums up the mission of our summer program.
Summer Force and Triple S came together on Thursday to create a giant newsprint sign that says I CARE. The A is a ribbon shape, and the letters are outlined in red. They decorated the insides of the letters (and then a lot of the surrounding space) with graffiti-like decorations, ranging from words and sayings like feel better and get well soon, to drawings of people, flowers, and hearts. It really turned out great, and I can't wait to show it to the parents at the final reception. LeVar says he would like to pass it on to a kids organization that deals with HIV/AIDS and I think that's a very inspirational idea.
I'm so stoked for animal cruelty week, I hope I don't cry. Everyone who talks to me for more than a few minutes knows I'm a huge sucker for my cats. We're almost at the halfway point now, and we're cruising along smoothly despite this terrible weather and a few closings!
All for now,

this week revealed alot to me. from the smaller things like how to communicate with younger kids to extreme things like seeing a day in the life of a recovering addict. working with younger kids is a drastic change to me because throughout my life all I've been with my classmates for 8 years thats my whole elementary and middleschool years. sometimes I would find myself using bigger words that the younger kids won't understand and then i have to reword my whole sentence and that helped my communication skills. also working with the kids at Baltimore Station helped me see a total different story of addicts rather than the false stories that mainstream media tells us and thats something I will never forget

This week I had a great experince.I experince alot of things like Baltimore Station the baltimore station is a place for people who are goin through addiction wit drugs, alchol etc.I felt very emotion because the stuff the ways talkin about was true and real these thing could happen to anyone but it won t happen to u and u make the right choice. You can be a follower or a leader and i choose to be a leader and do the right things
Domonic Faulknher
what we learn this week is learning to help people and not to think about your self and to help people with problem and some people need more help than others and what i learn to help other in many ways the reason why people go to places is because they need all help and some stuff will help them if they need it and people have to stop during drugs and they want go throw what they go throw all people dont want help and the drugs they used is not good and they try to kill them self. most of the kids like the lesson and like the people they saw and they talk to some people about there live and other stuff asking why they do the stuff ,some people can not help them self. most people need to see a doctor for help but they dont

My time at St. Francis began just yesterday and it is an enjoyment already. The kids and faculty are very easy to like and get along with and were very welcoming when i walked through the door. i enjoyed interacting with the kids and getting to know the staff. I came here on an account of Mr. Levar Jones and i am so glad i did. I am always a litttle nervous when stepping into a new environment but i quickly realized that it was not even necessary.I am glad i decided to come here and join the Power Project it has been a great way to begin my summer. :)!!!

this week we had some men come from from the baltimore station and talk to the prodijies about the addictions that they had .the men ask them about did they know about what addition was and about drugs and alcohol. we also went to the baltimore station the next day to give back . we went on a tour. the explain to us about the bed situation . if they didnt have their beds made then they would get everything taken away from them and they wouldnt get it back. we made sandwitches for them and looked at the garden.

Ms. Joi Writes about Addiction
No more tears, no more pain
Healing in life is my thing.
Just saying no is the sky to the limit
Addiction can be a critic.
Personality, attitudes, what I discovered working together
Is we can all recover from the abuse of drugs and alcohol.
On the streets as kids growing up
We can be the ones to defeat the challenges in life
That we'll be forced to meet.

Pretty Ugly.....
Last Monday we began our Summer of Service with The Power Project. As the Volunteer Coordinator, I wasn't too involved with the frontline, hands-on interaction with our youth. I was more the background person; the one working behind the scenes to make sure volunteers were prepared to work with our young people.
It wasn't until Monday, June 28th that I actually took a frontline position during program hours. I worked with "Triple S" (Successful Summer Stars), a group of great prodigies with ridiculous amounts of energy. Our first task was to make a map of our block. Ms. Joi, a parent volunteer, had the wonderful idea of going for a walk around the block. We were supposed to first make a map of our neighborhood, make a list of the beautiful aspects of the neighborhood, and then make a list of the aspects that we would like to change. Walking around with our prodigies in tow, I had the opportunity to take some pictures of the block. Juwarn, one of the prodigies, walked with me on our tour. I had instructed him to help me find things that were beautiful that I could photograph. I also had also instructed Japri (another prodigy) to find things that needed changng or fixing of which we could make a mental note. Juwarn happily pointed out beautiful flowers and birds, pretty rocks and the like while Japri excitedly pointed out garbage, graffiti, and abandoned buildings.
After a while, I realized that these young people have a knack fo rbeing able to designate the beautiful from the not so beautiful. They have an incredible ability to be able to take time to appreciate the good from the bad and the ugly. Looking at the world with open eyes, they see what is there; not just what they want to see.
Walking further on our journey, we stopped by a stone gate that was falling apart. "There is something that's ugly!" Japri cried excitedly. Convincing him that trying to break the wall down further probably wasn't the best idea was not an easy feat. When all else fails; offer to take a picture! So that is what I did, I took a picture of Juwarn and Japri beside the dilapidated stone gate. The picture represents not only a need for repair, but a commitment. It represents the commitment of The Power Project as a program to the youth of Reservoir Hill. Young people can be concerned about their community. Young people do have the ability to create change in their environments. Being able to look indiscriminatingly at their neighborhood and then taking that initiative to put the positive and negative on paper takes an openness that many adults don't have.
The resiliency of our prodigies is amazing. Knowing that the support provided by The Power Project will bolster and nurture that resiliency makes me proud to a part of the family at SFNC. I can't wait to see how the seeds that we are planting will foster a spirit of service within our prodigies....

Andrea's First Post
Our first two days of the program have been really exciting, especially because I've seen numerous new faces. Our small groups did such a good job forming their Identities- a concept that we will continue to expand upon all summer. I was particularly proud of my small group- triple s (Successful Summer Stars), for being so optimistic with their name choice, and for eventually agreeing on our team colors, despite the fact that they did not perfectly match their "favorite" colors.
I was lucky enough to observe Alden's drawing class, which I thought ran very smoothly. It's interesting to see how youth respond when they have a subject that engages them, along with a capable instructor who has proved his abilities (he shared a few drawings- one of Martin Luther King Jr. that was phenomenal). Our classroom was so quiet- a rare occurrence with the Power Project- and everyone worked diligently on creating personalized trees. I'll try to get a few up here with Alden's permission, they were great. Next week he's working on cartoons.
Okay, last thing- WHERE DOES THE TIME GO? We must all be having a lot of fun, because it seems like our 4.5 hours with the kids just whiz by each day. The fast pace of changing activities with lunch to split up the day seems like a great formula for keeping everyones attention on point.
That's all for now!
